Campari was invented by Signore Campari himself — Gaspare Campari — in Novara, Italy in 1860. It is an essential ingredient in the classic Negroni cocktail, the Garibaldi, the Americano (which was named at a time when few Americans were aware of Campari), and the Spritz. Wine Enthusiast has reviewed Campari on a number of occasions, giving it a score of "96/100" in 2011. Campari is also rated in the Top 10 percentile of liqueurs in the world.

Tasting: Campari's prominent flavor is that of a strong bittersweet orange. It's very complex and there are notes of cherry, clove, and cinnamon as well. It's one of the most bitter spirits, which adds to its appeal for many drinkers
